Five times Ballon d’Or winner and Portuguese Captain, Cristiano Ronaldo may have floored his archrival, Lionel Messi yet again, after the Juventus star helped his country to win another major trophy on Sunday June 9, 2019.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have been major rivals in the last 11 years as both have “singlehandedly” won 10 Ballon d’Or awards in the last 11 years with each winning five, until Luka Modric snatched the football most coveted award from the duo in 2018.
Ronaldo and Messi have been subject of discussion in the last 11 years, with their fans contending for superiority on their behalf. While Ronaldo fans claim that he’s better than Messi, Messi fans claim that he’s better than Ronaldo with both sides having reasonable points to justify their claims.
Messi has broken many football records in his Spanish football club, Barcelona, wining several trophies; He has also won five Ballon d’Or awards while playing for Barcelona. Messi fans have also cited many qualities to rate him higher than Ronaldo; however, he has not won any major trophy for Argentina at senior level; whereas, Ronaldo has won major trophy for his country when he lead Portugal to become the 2016 European championship, after defeating France in the Final.
Ronaldo on the other hand has won five Ballon d’Or awards while playing in two different clubs, Manchester United and Real Madrid. Besides, unlike Messi who has not played for any other club except Barcelona, Ronaldo fans have claimed that Ronaldo is better than Messi as he has played in four different clubs in different leagues, namely Lisbon in Portuguese league-Portugal, Manchester United in English Premiership-England, Real Madrid in La liga- Spain and currently Juventus in Series A, Italy.
Messi however seems to have broken the jinx of not winning trophy at senior level on Saturday when he scored twice in 5-1 match against Nicaragua to help his country wins Copa San Juan trophy. However many people, especially Ronaldo fans considered the “Copa San Juan” not a credible trophy.
But while Messi’s fans were still in the euphoria of their idol’s feat on Saturday, Ronaldo recorded another major international success on Sunday when he led Portugal to win the Maiden UEFA Nations League trophy.
With the UEFA Nations League trophy, Ronaldo fans have claimed it is another major defeat for Messi, his archrival who will be leading Argentina to log it out against Colombia on Saturday, June 15, 2019 in the opening of the Copa America, 2019.
