As all is set for the commencement of operation at the Onitsha port, the Buahri Media Organisation has said activities at the port will enhance the nation’s economic activities.
The organisation stated that with the commencement of operations at the Onitsha River Port, it has become more obvious that President Muhammadu Buhari is determined to boost the economy of the South East region of the country more than any of his immediate predecessors.
According to the Buhari Media Organisation (BMO), the idea for a port to be developed in the commercial city of Onitsha was mooted 40 years ago, but there had been no operation of any kind there until recently when containers of goods started arriving the port.
In a statement signed by its Chairman Niyi Akinsiju and Secretary Cassidy Madueke, BMO noted that with the delivery of containers to the Onitsha Port, businesses in the South East region will now be saved the inconvenience and extra costs of clearing their goods and transporting them from Lagos.
“It also demonstrates the willingness of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to rejuvenate the economy of the area by enhancing their businesses. This is also in line with the Buhari administration’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan”.
BMO, while commending the President for this singular achievement also enjoined the people of South-East to reciprocate the President’s good gesture by lending their support to the various policies and programmes of the administration. “This development also offers an opportunity for the States in the South East and its environs to energise their economies for the benefit of their people.
“The Federal Government has, through this move, created the enabling environment for the export of goods produced in the region. The new port, apart from boosting commercial activities around the axis, will further create jobs for the teeming population of the South East. There is also no doubt that the port which was started more than forty years ago will help to stimulate economic activities along the Eastern corridor.
The group also observed that other Eastern ports like Calabar and Warri have started berthing containers from as far away as China.
