…Laments state of insecurity, lawlessness in Lagos

The Center for Human and Socio-economic Rights (CHSR), and its allied bodies has called on the Lagos State governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu to rise up as a matter of urgency to address the rising spate of lawlessness and insecurity in the state to avoid further loss of lives and property.

In his speech at the briefing, Omotehinse said “…the CHSR and its allies strongly condemn the present state of unrest and anarchy in Lagos State. The security situation in Lagos state is becoming unbearable as  looters, hoodlums and miscreants have taken over the streets in almost every part of the state, thereby degenerating to unrest, panicking and in some places leading to loss of lives .

“Our attention has been drawn to report of an incident that occurred around Oko Oba area of Agege, in Lagos State, where some suspected hoodlums have attacked the Isokoko police station, where over 30 operational rifles of the police were allegedly carted away in the wake of the #Endsars protest. The place is a short distance to Abattoir where an attack was targeted at the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture’s warehouses in a bid to loot the Lagos state palliatives.

“The hoodlums, who were armed, it was gathered, opened fire at the police team stationed to maintain law and order within that perimeter, and the police in a counter move retaliated, which led to pandemonium  and later resulted to an unfortunate loss of a live.  We as a right group have noticed of recent the state of lawlessness, anarchy and other forms of criminalities in Nigeria but particular reference to Lagos State, hence we call on the  law enforcement agencies to rise to the challenges of curbing this spates of lawlessness.

“It should be clear to all that a no police state is a state of anarchy that does no good to anyone. After a careful study of events of the Oko Oba  Agege incident, we as unbiased, trusted  group categorically  state that men of the Lagos task force and other police formations on ground acted professionally in the face of the  attack and shootings.

“The CHSR sympathizes with the families and friends of all victims of this present unwarranted situation in the state. We equally urge the police authority to ensure that in any of their call to duty engagements civility should be the watchword.

“Intelligent gathering by us have shown that residents stands high risk of attacks now. Therefore, we call on the police to beef up security all over the state because those who hijacked the EndSARS protest, burnt police stations and carted away arms and ammunition, police uniforms are definitely going to make use of such dangerous weapons”, Omotenhinse said.

Lending his voice to the call to Governor Sanwo-Olu and CP Odumosu, the National Coordinator, Activists for Good Governance, Comrade Declan Ihekaire noted that whoever attacks police while doing their job as expected is inviting anarchy, hence the government needs to the needful.

Ihekaire said “we can see the effect of the EndSARS protest on police. They are afraid to go office. Many Nigerians now see police as their enemies and killers; whereas, we need cooperation of the police and police also need our cooperation to have a safe society. Whoever attacks police while doing their job as expected is inviting anarchy, hence the government needs to do the needful by beefing up security”.

On his part, Comrade Olatunde Owoeye-Wise of Center for the Protection of Indigenous Peoples Rights lamented that the bad boys in the state, with ulterior motives, are now moving around, taking advantage of the absence of police on the street to attack innocent citizens. Hence the State Governor and Commissioner of Police must rise up to the challenges.

While condemning the ongoing series of attack in Lagos state, Comrade Ekundayo Shoyoye noted that no one can enjoy in a society without the security operatives. He therefore urged Governor Sanwo-Olu and CP Odumosu to rise up to the challenge by putting the needed structure in place.

Similarly, Comrade Funmi Jolade Ajayi hinted that the recent crisis at Oko Oba would have gone worst without the professional timely intervention of the police, stressing that the citizens and the police need each other, saying innocent Nigerians will be the one to suffer any further attack on police.
