Human rights can’t be abrogated because of pandemic -Human right Lawyer

The immediate past National President, Committee for the Defense of Human Right (CDHR), Barrister Malachy Ugwummadu has challenged the Nigeria government to hold the Nigerians human rights in high esteem even in the face of the ravaging pandemic.
The human right lawyer stated that human rights cannot be abrogated because of pandemic, noting that some fundamental human rights of the masses were trapped during the pandemic lockdown in the country, which is wrong.
The former CDHR president was the guest speaker at an event organised by the Lagos State chapter of the Committee for the Defense of Human Right (CDHR) to mark the world human right day on December 10.
The theme of the event is “recover better- stand up for human right, security challenge and roles of civil society.
Ugwummadu reiterated at the event that if Nigeria must be a great nation, it must do what great nations are doing.
He said “human right can’t be abrogated because of pandemic. The most important of all human rights, apart from right to life, is the socio economic right which include right to work and right to eat. These rights were trapped during the pandemic because of the lockdown. People cannot go to work and because of that, many people don’t have food to eat. The government claim to be providing palliative which later became a scam.
“The rights of people were denied during the lockdown, whereas, in advanced countries, the government provides palliatives and social security in form of payment to people. If we aspire to be a great nation that we always talk about, then we must do some of those things the great nations are doing, which include provision of social security for the unemployed and under-employed people in our country”, Ugwummadu said.
