Covid-19 second wave: NPA, Terminal operators charged on safety protocol
As Lagos State and many other states of country have been witnessing what has been described as the second wave of covid-19 with unprecedented rising figure of infected people on a daily basis, the President General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) Prince Adewale Adeyanju has called on the management of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and terminal operators to put necessary measures in place to contain the spread of the virus at the port.
Adeyanju made the call on Wednesday, urging NPA and terminal operators to provide necessary kits for workers and stakeholders entering their offices and terminals to avoid spreading the virus into the terminals and other facility in and around the port
He said “from what we are hearing about the second wave of Covid-19,we want to reemphasize that the authorities concerned, that is the Ministry of Health should alert all terminal operators by way of putting on their guards to do what they did in the first instance
“The terminal operators should put in more efforts this time to provide necessary kits for all workers and stakeholders working in their various terminals. We must not sleep over this matter because if it affects any worker, we know what will happen in the entire terminal to workers and stakeholders in the port. I want to appeal to Nigerian Ports Authority that before any vessel will come to the port, it should be quarantined”, Adeyanju said.
He however said the union would get in touch with International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) to extend help to the union where necessary so as to cushion the effect of the pandemic on members, especially seafarers on board vessels.
