Abia Govt Accuses Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu of Betrayal, Deceit and Arrogance

Abia State Government has accused the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, of exhibiting what it described as a growing pattern of deceit, betrayal, and arrogance that questions his moral integrity and suitability for leadership.
In a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, the state government said it had become necessary to address what it called the “deceitful conduct” of the Deputy Speaker, whom it described as “a known traitor, liar, serial betrayer, and an arrogant man driven by uncontrollable pride.”
The government alleged that Kalu’s political journey had been marked by acts of disloyalty and ingratitude toward those who helped shape his political path.
According to the statement, former Abia State Governor and current Senator representing Abia North, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, played a major role in Benjamin Kalu’s rise to prominence—mentoring, financing, and even providing him with the flight ticket that took him abroad.
It further claimed that Senator Kalu, out of goodwill, gave Benjamin Kalu 25 percent of his shares in Bende Export Limited, despite owning 100 percent of the company at the time. “Sadly, Benjamin Kalu squandered the entire investment, leaving his benefactor with nothing,” the statement said.
The government added that despite that disappointment, Senator Kalu still supported Kalu’s political ambition and helped him secure a seat in the House of Representatives, even against his own brother from Igbere. “Unfortunately, Benjamin Kalu repaid that kindness with betrayal, turning against the very man who built him,” the statement alleged.
It also accused the Deputy Speaker of maligning and gossiping about Senator Orji Uzor Kalu before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, “forgetting the hands that once lifted him.” Such conduct, the statement said, exposes him as “untrustworthy and unfit to speak about governance or aspire to lead Abia State.”
The government noted that Governor Alex Otti, who was Senator Kalu’s banker at the time, is well aware of the transactions that demonstrate how Orji Uzor Kalu empowered Benjamin Kalu financially and politically.
“Leadership demands humility, loyalty, and integrity—qualities Benjamin Kalu lacks. His arrogance and unbridled pride have become his trademark, making him unfit to represent the collective interests of the Abia people.”
Reaffirming its commitment to transparent leadership and delivery of good governance, the Abia State Government said it would not be distracted by “individuals whose political survival depends on lies, betrayal, and deceit. Abia State deserves better”, the statement concluded.
