Security Agencies Declared Total Clampdown on Homosexuality in Nigeria

Bars, Clubs, and Event Centers Closed, As Homosexuals, Lesbians Arrested
It is no longer news that same-sex marriage/relationship has become an open practice in many Western countries with laws protecting homosexuality and lesbianism already in place; the practice has also found its way into some African countries, including Nigeria; however, the security agencies in Nigeria appear to have started gradually curtailing the practice, and this is because the combined effort of the securities operatives across the country is currently hard on those that are engaging in a same-sex affair as gay crime is a punishable offence across Africa continent and Nigeria states with a punishment of more than ten years prison term in Nigeria and under the Islamic law in Nigeria is punishable by death and some Africa countries.
The move against same-sex marriage started in 2014 when former president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan signed the anti-gay bill into law, forbidding same-sex relationships with 14 years imprisonment for any offender. However, there were reports that many western countries were not happy with the move; that notwithstanding, the law has come to stay, and the security operatives are vigorously enforcing the law by bursting suspected spots and hideouts for those practising the shameful act and anti-social behaviour, especially in the South-Southern part of the country. Many suspects have also been arrested to ensure that homosexuality is entirely out of place in Nigeria.
The security forces are not just bursting the LGBTIQ+ practice spots or arresting suspects; they may have declared a total clampdown on their activities, as records have shown that they have recorded remarkable success by shutting down several clubs, event centres, bars, restaurants, and recreational facilities used by suspected members of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender group.
According to sources, one of the closed-down spots is the popular Freedom Bar in Ethiopia West in Delta State, and the sealed Free Heaven Bar in Bayelsa after a fight broke out that led to two gay men and one transgender person seriously injured, which attracted security forces and some LGBTQ+ members arrested. It was gathered that the police had raided the spot following an intelligent report that the bars had become a hideout for LGBTQ+ members and where drugs like marijuana, known as Cannabis sativa, are sold. The police have even been applauded for their ability to have arrested the suspected owner of the bars, one identified as Oterri Oghaleoghene Mairo, who escaped arrest several months ago.
Another spot known as the Q’s Bar and Girls Soho Bar and Gay Fellowship, allegedly opened by a suspected homosexual practitioner, identified as A. O. Agho, in Ogida, Egor and Upper Ekenwan Road, both in Benin City Edo state, has also reportedly been shut down after the security operative has gotten facts that the spots used for gay and lesbian activities.
Meanwhile, according to the source, three suspects, namely Dennis Isuwa, Amabara Amaso and Akpotutari Dawari, all suspected top lesbians in Edo state and Bayelsa State, respectively, have also been arrested by security operatives. One Funkuro Ebide, identified as a suspected gay activist, is currently on the police wanted list.
Another suspect, a 24 years old Basket Ball player, Chiagozi Yvonne Nwudu, has reported being re-arrested in a community known as Azagba in Benin City, Edo state, after a detective burst into their hideout as she is now being prosecuted for the crime of homosexual after her partner who was said to be an international student escaped from detention after she fails sick, while in police custody in Yenogoa, Bayelsa.
Even in South West, same-sex affairs are not out of place. For instance, one Abimbola Shonibare, a 36yrs old suspected gay practitioner, is currently on the wanted list of the security operatives after he has successfully escaped arrest several times. Sources said his whereabouts are still unknown, but the securities operatives are combing everywhere to get him arrested.
While Abimbola Shonibare is still on the wanted list, his suspected lover, Reuben Ayodele, has also been fingered as the President of LGBTQ+ in Lagos, according to a source, and has since been arrested early this year. Ayodele was said to be the first person to launch the first LGBTQ+ Oracle Centre in Igbuobazuwa in Ovia South-West Local Government Area of Edo State before relocating to Lagos. However, according to the source, the LGBTQ+ Oracle Centre has also been closed down by community leaders and security agents.
Another Homosexual Club allegedly established by one late Kasim Wasiu in Lagos has also been shut down. Similarly, a spot known as Freedom for Glory Club in the Bariga area of Lagos, allegedly operated by Nathaniel Dan and one Adetunji Ismail Onibiyo, has been closed down. Many LGBTQ+ suspects were arrested when security forces invaded the spot, including one Yande Idowu, whom the police are still searching for and also the Isolo arrest of more than eight homosexuals in the famous hotel known as Felinco, where most of them confessed to the crime.
It was reliably gathered that the late Ibrahim Onibiyo, a transgender person, confessed her brother’s involvement in the LGBTQ+ movement before her death after the attack by mobed action that led to her death in 2019. Moreover, one of his gang who was among the 47 persons raided in a Gay initiation party organized by one of their members, James B., his 24th Birthday party in August 2018 in the Egbeda district of Lagos and was charged to court with 46 others before the judge threw the case out in October 2020 due to a lack of evidence and due diligence on the side of the prosecutors, where still among those that escape arrest. Since then, the police have re-enforced the search for him and his gang. The LGBTQ+ leader, whose whereabouts are unknown, is still wanted by the police.
While the security operatives deserve commendation, one of their officials has said they cannot cleanse the country from same-sex affairs and other anti-social vices without the general public’s support. According to him, many spots are currently under watch, and many suspects are also on their watch list, noting that security agents are determined and committed to the course to ensure that homosexuality is wiped out in Nigeria.
