Expert Highlights Roles of History to Problem Solving at Crawford University Public Lecture

The Chief Executive Officer of Atlantic Marine and Oilfield Services, Limited, Nigeria, Mr. Humphrey Okposo, has identified history as a key factor in providing solutions to various challenges facing humanity and the economy.

Okposo said this recently while delivering lecture at the eighth public lecture of Crawford University in Faith City, Igbesa, Ogun State, South West Nigeria. According to Okposo, to overcome the myriad of challenges facing humans; people, especially leaders, must fall back to history for a clue to solutions.

In the lecture titled “The History of Our Future: A Concept of Business Leadership,” Okposo also emphasised the importance of building, projecting and sustaining relationships in leadership.

He stated, “Every discussion or banter in life is a negotiation. As business animals who negotiate, interact, transact, lead, and follow, we must continue to build friendships and relationships. Again, there cannot be a business transaction without someone seeking to lead.”

Okposo, who explained the theory of leadership such as Transformational, Servant Leadership, Autocratic and Democratic theory, amongst others, pointed out that “The Great Man Theory,” emphasises that great leaders were born with essential personality traits.

Expert Highlights Roles of History to Problem Solving at Crawford University Public LectureHe said, “Understanding our background can direct how quickly we become leaders in our different lives and endeavours. History provides lessons for leadership and decision-making.”

He stressed the importance of historical case studies in guiding present and future leaders, adding that historical case studies will also guide future leaders to work around complex challenges or situations and make informed decisions.

He said, “From informed decision-making to fostering identity, critical thinking, empathy, and leadership skills, history serves as the cornerstone for personal growth and societal progress. History is key to effective governance, diplomacy and conflict resolution”.

The speaker also advanced history to be embedded with intuitive knowledge and understanding of our genealogy; and as a compass or life navigational instrument.

In appreciation, as Chairman of the occasion, Crawford University, Vice Chancellor, Professor Reuben Jiya Kolo described Okposo as a versatile lecturer and recapped the importance of history. He was also commended for originality by the Academics in attendance.

The VC said “We all know that history is very important. The return to history in our schools shows its importance. It is a fact, that if we know where we are coming from, we will know where we are going.”

The public lecture was attended by Reverend Fathers, Royal Fathers, and Academics representatives from Covenant University, lecturers, students, friends, families, and well-wishers among other dignitaries.
