End bad governance protest: South- South state coordinators escape arrest

One of the coordinators of the August 1-10, end bad governance protest in Delta State, South – South Nigeria, identified as Gavin Omoruyi has escaped arrest.

He was being targeted for arrest for the roles he played during the protest which eventually turned violent. The protest in Sapele, Delta State on Thursday, August 1, being the first day of the protest was more than a mere protest but a boil out of frustration and anger at the biting reality of economic hardship.

The security agents in South – South had warned earlier against any violent act in the region, but the protesters had defied the warning in some venues in the region, a development that has compelled the security agents to go after some of their leaders.

It was gathered that Gavin Omoruyi spare headed one of the protesters group.

Although the security agents have not been able to arrest Gavin Omoruyi, it was gathered that three other coordinators in the region have been arrested, while Gavin Omoruyi and one other are currently at large.

Meanwhile, before August 1, the Nigeria government has warned against any protest in any part of the country.  However, organisers of the protest have called for 10 days of street demonstrations beginning on August 1 to protest against bad governance, corruption and the increasing cost of living that has left millions of Nigerians reeling.

In states like Kano and Yobe states, protests turned violent, as some protesters attacked vehicles, looting shops and stores, a development that had prompted respective state governments to impose a curfew.

In Abuja the federal capital, the police fired back tear gas shells to disperse protesters, and gunshots were heard.
