The Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON), the country’s leading collective management organization for musical works and sound recordings, has announced an exciting lineup of events for its highly anticipated COSON Week 2025, set to begin on Sunday, May 25, in Lagos.
In an update shared recently, Chief Tony Okoroji, Chairman of the COSON Board and former President of PMAN, disclosed that at a crucial board meeting held on April 8 at the iconic COSON House in Ikeja, the full board ratified a series of spectacular events that promise to make this year’s COSON Week one to remember.
The COSON Week 2025 is designed to showcase Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage while addressing important social issues. The week-long celebration will kick off on Sunday, May 25, with a spiritually significant National Day of Prayer at the Chapel of Christ the Light in Ikeja. The event will feature top gospel musicians and ministers, broadcast live and streamed globally, uniting Nigerians across the country and abroad in prayer for peace and national renewal.
In view of this, the COSON Lecture will take place on May 26 at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Victoria Island. Legal expert and senior advocate, Babatunde Ogala SAN, will deliver a lecture on “The Political & Legal Environment Necessary for the Continued Growth of the Nigerian Creative Industry,” a topic that promises to generate insightful discussions on policy and the legal framework needed to foster further growth of Nigeria’s creative sector.
Children’s Day at COSON House will be celebrated on May 27, offering a day of entertainment, education, and empowerment for young Nigerians. The event at COSON House in Ikeja will feature performances, workshops, and activities aimed at inspiring the next generation of artists.
Lagos will witness an unprecedented 24-hour non-stop music concert on Wednesday, May 28, with COSON Mega Jamz held at Freedom Park. This event will feature performances from leading Nigerian musicians across various genres and promises to be an unforgettable celebration of Nigeria’s vibrant music scene.
In an important move to support the health and well-being of Nigerian musicians, COSON Medical Outreach will take place on Thursday, May 29, at COSON House. In collaboration with Care Life Medical Centre, free medical consultations and treatments will be offered to musicians, helping those in need with essential healthcare services.
On Friday, May 30, the celebrations will continue with COSON in the Mosque at the Lagos Central Mosque, Ebute Metta, before transitioning into the exclusive COSON Green Ball in the evening at the MUSON Centre. This high-profile event will see 150 of Nigeria’s most influential figures gather for a night of luxury dining and entertainment.
The final day of COSON Week will be dedicated to giving back to the community. On Saturday, May 31, COSON members will visit orphanages and charity homes across Lagos, distributing gifts and support to those in need. The event, called COSON Visits the Less Privileged, is a reflection of COSON’s ongoing commitment to social responsibility and charity.
In addition to planning the week’s events, the COSON Board also approved the audited accounts and financial statements for the year ending December 31, 2024. The board discussed measures to increase the income distributed to members and affiliates and outlined strategies to protect the rights of Nigerian creatives.
COSON’s efforts to fight copyright infringement were also highlighted, with updates on various ongoing lawsuits aimed at protecting the intellectual property of its members.
The COSON Board is led by Chief Tony Okoroji, the celebrated former President of the Performing Musicians Employers Association of Nigeria (PMAN), and includes notable figures such as Afro Juju music legend Sir Shina Peters, gospel star Kenny Saint Brown, ace drummer Richard Ayodele Cole, reggae gospel artist Righteousman Erhabor, TV host Zdon Paporella, and others who have played key roles in shaping Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
