Kalu Thanks Abia North for Renewed Confidence, Promises Bigger Dividends as APC Picks Him for 2027

For Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Monday’s victory at the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary was more than a routine political triumph. It was, in his words, a reaffirmation of the trust and affection that the people of Abia North have continued to place in him over the years.
With a heart “full of gratitude,” the former governor of Abia State and current representative of Abia North Senatorial District thanked God, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, and, most importantly, the people of Arochukwu, Ohafia, Bende, Isuikwuato and Umunneochi for once again giving him the opportunity to fly the party’s flag in the 2027 senatorial election.
But beyond the words of appreciation, Kalu’s message underscored a broader argument: that the confidence reposed in him has translated into measurable gains for the people of Abia North, and that a renewed mandate would bring even greater dividends.
The senator, popularly known as OUK, has built his political brand on the promise that leadership should produce tangible results. In less than six and a half years in the Senate, he says that promise has been reflected in an aggressive legislative agenda, massive infrastructure projects, educational interventions, healthcare programmes and investment initiatives designed to transform the economic fortunes of the district.
Kalu told his supporters that while he was deeply humbled by the APC’s endorsement, the true owners of the victory are the people who have stood by him through the years.
“Your love, prayers, support and trust continue to inspire me,” he said in his appreciation message. “I love you all deeply.”
That emotional connection with the electorate has been central to Kalu’s politics. Since his election to the Senate in 2019, he has sought to position himself not just as a lawmaker but as a development-driven representative with a focus on practical outcomes.
At the National Assembly, Kalu has sponsored more than 20 bills, touching on areas ranging from education, security and criminal justice reform to environmental regulation, taxation, shipping and green energy.
Among the bills he highlighted are amendments to the Coastal and Inland Shipping Act, the Armed Forces Act, the Universal Basic Education Act, the Electoral Act and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act. He also sponsored the National Food Bank Establishment Bill, the Tax Crime Commission Bill and the Electric Vehicle Transition and Green Mobility Bill.
In addition, Kalu has championed constitutional amendments aimed at moving railways and electricity from the exclusive legislative list to the concurrent list, a move he believes will deepen decentralisation and accelerate infrastructure and industrial development across Nigeria.
He has also consistently advocated stronger community policing and governance reforms to improve security at the grassroots.
Yet Kalu’s strongest selling point to constituents may not lie in the legislative chamber but in the visible projects he says his office has attracted to Abia North.
According to the senator, over 70 road projects have been facilitated across the five local government areas in the district through strategic partnerships and effective representation.
These projects, spread across rural and urban communities, are intended to improve access, boost economic activity and connect previously underserved areas.
Healthcare has also been a major pillar of his intervention strategy.
Kalu noted that thousands of mothers, elderly citizens and vulnerable residents have benefited from free medical services under the National Health Insurance Scheme, helping to ease the burden of healthcare costs for families.
In education, his interventions have been equally extensive.
The senator said he facilitated the renovation and construction of more than 100 schools and distributed desks, instructional materials, free STEM textbooks, school sandals and uniforms to pupils throughout the district.
He also opened doors for foreign scholarships and overseas training opportunities for youths and women, which he described as part of a long-term commitment to human capital development.
For Kalu, development is not an abstract concept but a personal mission to create opportunities for every child, regardless of community.
He painted a vivid picture of children from Isu, Amanagwu Arochukwu, Ndi Ibe Ohafia, Ndi Inyang Abam, Ezeukwu Bende, Nneato Umunneochi and Uturu in Isuikwuato having a fair chance at a brighter future.
That philosophy has also informed his economic empowerment programmes.
Through skills acquisition and empowerment initiatives, thousands of women and youths have received tools, equipment and support materials to establish businesses and improve their livelihoods.
In an effort to stimulate industrial growth and job creation, Kalu said he has attracted strategic investments to the district.
These include the completed Cashew Processing Factory in Igbere, as well as ongoing projects such as a Solar Panel Factory and a Keke Manufacturing Plant.
If completed and fully operational, these projects are expected to create employment opportunities and strengthen the local economy.
His office has also undertaken interventions in communities affected by erosion and flooding, addressing environmental challenges that have displaced residents and threatened infrastructure.
Taken together, the projects and programmes form the foundation of Kalu’s argument that Abia North has benefited substantially from his first two terms in the Senate.
The senator’s message suggests that while he is grateful for the support of the people, he believes they have gained even more from the relationship through improved infrastructure, social services and economic opportunities.
Now seeking a fresh mandate in 2027, Kalu says the work is far from over.
He expressed optimism that the people of Abia North would once again entrust him with the responsibility of representing them, pledging to continue building “a more prosperous, united and progressive Abia North.”
Political observers note that Kalu remains one of the most visible and influential politicians in the South-East. His combination of legislative activism, grassroots engagement and investment-focused representation has helped him maintain a strong support base across the district.
His latest primary victory reinforces that standing and sets the stage for what is likely to be another high-profile senatorial race.
For many of his supporters, however, the APC primary was not just about securing a ticket. It was a validation of a representation they believe has brought concrete benefits to their communities.
For Kalu himself, it was an opportunity to say thank you.
“Abia North, mma-mma nu!” he declared, using an Igbo expression that conveys admiration and affection for the people.
As the 2027 election approaches, the veteran politician is betting that gratitude, backed by a six-year record of legislative achievements and development projects, will once again resonate with the electorate.
And if his appreciation message is any indication, Kalu believes the partnership between himself and the people of Abia North has already yielded significant returns—with even more to come.
