Comptroller Anani Assumes Leadership at Tincan Customs Command, Warns Against Compromise, Inefficiency

By Tunde Ojudun -Comptroller Joe Anani has officially taken over as Customs Area Controller of the Tincan Island Port Command, Nigeria Customs Service, vowing to uphold discipline, transparency, and efficiency.
Speaking on Friday during the handover ceremony from ACG Frank Onyeka, Anani cautioned officers and men of the command that compromise and inefficiency will not be tolerated. He reminded personnel that he is not a stranger to the command, having served there previously, and urged strict adherence to extant laws, guidelines, and standard operating procedures.
Anani, who was redeployed from PTML Custom Command, pledged to build a command that is efficient, transparent, and result-oriented. He called for cooperation among officers and men, while emphasizing the importance of synergy with sister agencies operating at the port.
In his valedictory remarks, ACG Onyeka described his tenure as both emotional and historic, noting that serving as Area Controller was one of the greatest honours of his career.
He highlighted key milestones achieved under his leadership, saying that the command collected ₦1,609,874,328,972.55 in 2025, surpassing its target of ₦1,524,669,999,478.52. For Q1 2026, revenue stood at ₦401,011,998,443.71.
The command also recorded successes in its anti-smuggling drive, giving the significant seizures of illicit drugs and prohibited items worth over ₦35 billion in street value which underscored the command’s resolve to protect national security and public health.
The ACG also listed stakeholder engagement which led to robust partnerships with freight forwarders, terminal operators, shipping companies, importers, exporters, and government agencies to improve compliance, efficiency, and dispute resolution.
Human capital development is also one of his achievements. Training programmes, workshops, and professional development initiatives boosted officers’ competence, morale, and preparedness.
The command also supported the Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA), whose humanitarian programmes positively impacted officers’ families and the wider community.
Onyeka expressed gratitude to Comptroller-General of Customs and WCO Council Chairman, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR PhD, for his visionary leadership and support, noting that his transformational philosophy has repositioned the Service for greater efficiency, professionalism, and transparency.
