How Senator Orji Kalu Leads Senate Probe into Safe Schools Initiative, Demands Full Accountability from Ministers

By Saeed Tijjani. -The Senate Ad-hoc Committee investigating the Safe Schools Initiative Programme has grilled key federal officials over the utilization of public funds meant to secure educational institutions across the country.
The committee Chairman, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu hosted the Honourable Minister of Education and the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy at the National Assembly for high-level investigative hearings.
Opening the legislative sessions, Senator Kalu emphasized that the inquiry is rooted strictly in the Senate’s constitutional oversight responsibilities. He made it clear that the probe is designed to ensure absolute transparency, accountability, and value for public funds rather than serving as a political witch-hunt.
“Government is continuum. Whether these funds were released before the present ministers assumed office or not, government remains responsible for accounting for every kobo entrusted to it by the Nigerian people.”, the Lawmaker said.
Given the severe security challenges facing educational infrastructure including banditry and terrorist attacks, Senator Kalu noted that sensitive aspects of the proceedings were conducted behind closed doors to safeguard national intelligence and protect vulnerable schools from exploitation by criminal elements.
The Committee Chairman further commended both ministers for honoring the Senate’s invitation, noting that their cooperation underscores a shared respect for democratic institutions and the rule of law.
“Accountability is not optional in a democracy; it is an obligation owed to the people. Nigerians deserve answers, transparency, and effective implementation of programmes designed to protect our students, teachers, and learning environments.” He said.
Reaffirming the upper legislative chamber’s resolve, Senator Kalu stated that the Senate will continue to discharge its oversight duties without fear or favor.
“Our children deserve safe classrooms. Our nation deserves accountable governance. We remain committed to both.” Kalu concluded.
