By IK Ogbonna. The revival of the Eastern Railway is more than a transportation project—it is an economic lifeline for the Southeast. As Chairman of the South East Development Commission (SEDC), Senator Orji Uzor Kalu is well positioned to champion stronger collaboration with the Federal Government, the Nigerian Railway Corporation, state governments, and development partners to accelerate the rehabilitation and modernization of the rail corridor linking the Southeast.
A functional railway network would reduce the cost of moving goods, boost regional trade, attract investment, create thousands of jobs, ease pressure on our highways, and reconnect commercial hubs across the region. It would also improve access for farmers, manufacturers, students, and businesses, making the Southeast more competitive.
With strategic planning, sustained funding, and effective intergovernmental coordination, significant milestones can be achieved before the end of 2027, laying the foundation for long-term regional growth.
The journey has begun, but there is still more to accomplish.
