Edo moves to end human trafficking

…As Acting Gov. signs Human Trafficking Law

Human trafficking has been a thing of concern to Edo state government over the years and the state has since been in the vanguard of campaigning against the evil trade.

In her bid to curtail the anomaly, the state made a move to amend the law prohibiting human trafficking in the state, thereby discouraging the act in the State.

The Acting Governor of the state, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu on Wednesday signed the human trafficking law and two other laws amended by the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA).

The amended laws are the Edo State Trafficking in Persons Prohibition Law 2018; provisions of the Land Bill, Rates and Charges payable in Edo State into a single Charge to be called Land Use Charge, and the Edo State Local Government Uniform and Harmonised Levy, Rate, Fees and Charges Law 2017.

The acting governor thanked the Speaker and leadership of Edo State House of Assembly for their continued cooperation and support in ensuring that the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration succeeds in developing the state.

“This sixth Assembly has done something phenomenal by passing our bills in record time and Governor Godwin Obaseki commends the dedication of the EDHA.

“I thank the House and its leadership for their collaboration, which has resulted in the progress recorded in the State, which our people are benefiting from,” he stressed.

He said the amendment of the three laws reflect change, adding that the amendment is in line with the desires of the people of the state.

Meanwhile, the Acting Governor has assured members of EDHA that their resolution on the need for a pedestrian bridge at Ambrose Ali University (AAU), Ekpoma, will be given due consideration.

“As you have woken to see the pedestrian bridges at the University of Benin  (UNIBEN) and Auchi Polytechnic, you will wake to see a pedestrian bridge in AAU,” the Shuaibu assured the house.

Earlier in his remark while presenting the amended laws to the Acting Governor, the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Alhaji Kabiru Adjoto commended Comrade Shaibu for his leadership style, stating that the acting governor have demonstrated good leadership since the absence of the governor.

“You are acting well and Edo people are happy with you,” the speaker said.
