EPL restart: Arsenal may qualify for champions’ league

The English Premier League (EPL) restarts on Wednesday June 17, 2020 with an interesting match between Arsenal and Manchester City.

Until the suspension of the league in March, 2020, arsenal is number nine on the table with 40 points behind fourth place Chelsea, Manchester United, Wolves, Sheffield united and Tottenham. Arsenal is currently eight points behind the fourth place Chelsea who has 48 points. Arsenal however has one match outstanding and that is the match against Manchester City.

It may however interest every premier league admirer to know that Arsenal, though currently number nine on the table may still pick the champions league slot and of course this is not by magic.

Arsenal coach, Mikel Arteta even said shortly before the suspension of the league that Arsenal can still qualify for the Champions League. Arteta is convinced Champions League football remains within Arsenal’s grasp and that a strong run on the resumption of their Premier League campaign would reignite their hopes of a return to Europe’s elite.

To say that arsenal can still pick champions league ticket is not a mirage but realistic and one of the pointers to this is the fact that Arsenal have lost once albeit, perhaps crucially, against chelsea under Arteta’s charge and, while they have hardly been free-flowing, they do appear more disciplined and focused than in the latter days of Unai Emery’s tenure.

Arsenal currently has 11 more matches to play before the league wind down and the match are against Man City, Brighton, Southampton, Sheffield, Norwich, Wolves, Leicester, Tottenham, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Watford in that order.

With the team’s current level of discipline, the arteta side can convincingly win eight of the 11 fixtures. The three obvious big matches of the 11 fixtures are Man City, Tottenham and Liverpool. Of the three big matches, arsenal is also most likely to get reasonable points.

As a matter of fact, Chelsea and Man United have not really displayed much discipline as Arsenal since December when Arteta took over the team. So also Tottenham.  Liverpool and Man City are among the games Chelsea will still play. Man United on the other hand will still play Tottenham.

With the level of discipline Arsenal has displayed under Arteta, couple with total recovery of all the players from injury, it is realistic to point out that the Gunner can still secure champions league ticket. That will however depends on the level of their sustained discipline, determination and hardworking.
