Why Tinubu’s Vote of Confidence in Senator Orji Kalu To Lead Abia APC Is a Masterstroke

By Ik Ogbonna     -President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to hand Senator Orji Uzor Kalu the mandate to coordinate APC activities in Abia State is not a routine appointment. It is a calculated vote of confidence and frankly, the right one.

When the President issued that marching order, he was placing the party’s fortunes in Abia in the hands of the state’s most experienced political operator. As the most senior former governor of Abia, Senator Kalu brings something no other stakeholder currently possesses: deep and vast experience in both state and national politics, combined with direct, unfettered access to Mr. President.

That access matters. In Nigerian politics, proximity to the center is not cosmetic; it is strategic currency. It means Abia’s concerns can get to Aso Rock without distortion. It means federal interventions, appointments, and projects can be channeled faster when the coordinator can pick up the phone and reach the President directly. For a state that has often felt sidelined, this is no small advantage.

But experience and access only matter if they are deployed for unity. And that is the core of the President’s directive: to ensure APC in Abia produces candidates who are widely acceptable, united in purpose, and positioned to win.

Senator Kalu understands, perhaps better than anyone, the cost of division. He has seen how parallel structures, imposition, and ego battles handed Abia to the opposition in past cycles. A fragmented APC cannot deliver Abia for President Tinubu in 2027, and it certainly cannot reclaim Government House.

So the task before him is threefold:
First, he has to restore trust in the process.* Every bloc from legacy ACN members to recent PDP defectors, from Umuahia to Aba must believe the playing field is level. Consensus is good, but only when it is built, not imposed.

Secondly, he  unify the elders and the grassroots.

Kalu’s stature allows him to call stakeholders into one room and keep them there. His record as governor, Chief Whip of the Senate, and long-time party financier gives him the weight to broker peace without appearing to take sides.

Thirdly, he translates access into results for Abia. Victory for Tinubu and progress for Abia are not competing goals. The candidates APC fields must speak to jobs, infrastructure, and security. With Kalu’s direct line to the Presidency, those issues can move from campaign promises to federal attention.

Critics will say this is about one man. They’re wrong. This is about giving Abia APC its best shot at relevance. You do not send a recruit to do a general’s job. In Kalu, Tinubu has chosen a general — one who knows the terrain, knows the players, and knows the Villa.

The President has given the order. He has also given the right man the authority. If Abia APC stakeholders rally around this vote of confidence, 2027 will look very different from 2023.

The march has been ordered. The march must now begin.
