When I Was Gov,I Protected the People of Abia;I Never Had Sympathy For Anyone Who Broke the Law -Kalu

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, the lawmaker representing Abia North Senatorial District and a former governor of Abia State, has defended his record on security, insisting that his administration maintained law and order by taking a firm stance against criminality while protecting the lives and property of residents.

Kalu made the remarks during an interview on Arise News on Sunday, July 12, 2026, while discussing the ongoing push for the creation of state police and concerns over the potential abuse of such a policing system by state governors.

Responding to questions about safeguards against the misuse of state police, the former Abia governor argued that the primary responsibility of any government is to ensure the safety of its citizens. He maintained that his administration fulfilled that obligation during his tenure between 1999 and 2007.

According to Kalu, he never tolerated criminal activities while serving as governor, stressing that his government remained committed to enforcing the law and protecting residents across the state.

He also expressed confidence that the National Assembly would enact comprehensive legislation to regulate state police and prevent any future abuse by state governors. He said the proposed legal framework would include measures capable of checking excesses while ensuring that the new policing structure serves the interests of the people.

Kalu further stated that lawmakers are committed to producing laws that would strengthen public safety and provide effective oversight for state police operations if eventually established.

Speaking on his record as governor, Kalu said, “When I was governor, I protected the people of Abia State fully. I never had any sympathy for anyone who wanted to break the law, because the primary duty of government is to protect lives and property, and that is where I stand.”
