Flood Ravages Borno Communities, Scores Die, Thousands Displaced

Tragedy struck in Borno State on Tuesday September 10, 2024 when flood ravaged Borno State in North East Nigeria, killing near 50 people and displacing several thousands of people.

According to the Nigeria Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the state was submerged after the Alau Dam overflowed following heavy rains leading to the state’s worst flooding in 30 years.

According to NEMA, as by Wednesday September 11, 2024, 70 per cent of Maiduguri was submerged by the waters.

Communities and major cities in Maidugari Local Government Area of the state were submerged by the flood. Affected places include communities, palace of the Shehu of Borno, Umar Ibn Garbai El-Kanemi; the state secretariat, post office, cemetery, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital among others.

According to NEMA, communities and families have lost loved ones and properties worth millions of Dollars due to the unfortunate natural disaster.

Communities and other places in Borno State have remained perpetual target of Boko Haram unprovoked attacks over the years. Residents in Maiduguri and other communities in Borno State have been living in fear and trauma of incessant attacks.

The September 10 flood only added salt to the injuries of the residents of many communities in Borno State as life now becomes unbearable to them.

Residents and indigenes of many communities in Maiduguri Local Government Area and environ, whose lives and properties have been destroyed, are pleading for international and local supports as their sons and daughters flee for safety.
