2027: The Strategic Importance of Orji Uzor Kalu to the Presidency

By Gwen Ifeson. -As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) must recognise the importance of experienced political figures who can strengthen national engagement and promote inclusive governance. One such figure is Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, a former governor of Abia State and a serving senator representing Abia North.
Kalu’s decades of political experience give him a valuable understanding of Nigeria’s political landscape. Having served at both state and federal levels, he understands legislative negotiations, political alliances and the complexities of governance. These qualities could contribute to the Presidency’s efforts to build relationships, communicate policies and strengthen cooperation within the ruling party.
The South-East remains an important region in Nigeria’s political calculations. For the APC, building stronger relationships with the region requires sustained engagement rather than electoral promises alone. Kalu’s longstanding political presence in the South-East provides an opportunity for dialogue between the Presidency and regional stakeholders, although no single politician can claim to speak for the entire region.
Beyond electoral considerations, Kalu’s legislative responsibilities and engagement with the South-East Development Commission create opportunities to advocate for infrastructure, employment, investment and economic development. The Presidency should encourage political relationships that translate into measurable improvements in people’s lives rather than treating regional inclusion as merely a campaign strategy.
Kalu’s public support for Tinubu may also help communicate the administration’s policies and defend its political positions. However, political loyalty must go beyond public endorsements. Nigerians expect tangible results in areas such as economic relief, security, employment and infrastructure. Political allies should be willing to communicate these concerns to the government rather than simply praise its achievements.
As the 2027 elections draw closer, the Presidency needs relationships that encourage dialogue, strengthen political cooperation and promote national unity. Kalu could contribute to these objectives by engaging regional stakeholders, supporting constructive legislative debate and helping bridge political differences. His effectiveness, however, should be measured by his actual contributions rather than assumptions about his ability to deliver votes.
Ultimately, the argument for engaging Orji Uzor Kalu is not simply about securing political support for Tinubu in 2027. It is about using political experience and regional engagement to advance national development. The Presidency should recognise his potential contribution while ensuring that political alliances serve a greater purpose: improving governance, strengthening national unity and delivering meaningful benefits to Nigerians.
